REFLECTION:
Recently I've been focusing on producing a set of screen prints for the batsford prize, which I am really happy with. I like the fact that from a glance they look like a pair of quite abstract prints, but if you look a bit closer you can see it incorporates all my character design. I explored both colour and composition carefully for this brief which I said were a couple of my aims at the beginning of the year. These are probably my favourite things I've created so far this year, and at this moment in time I feel really happy with the direction my practise seems to be going in. These prints as well as my previous screen prints I am planning on selling at Print Stuff, which me and my friends luckily got a table for again this year! I love the thought of being in a room surrounded by other amazing illustrators and their work. I've learnt that producing a high quality screen print takes times, and I am now confident enough in the process I know what to do and what not to do to make sure it all goes smoothly.
Something else i've recently completed was my submission to the Renewi brief, to create 2 design concepts for some murals for different time periods in history. I actually really dislike my outcomes and I'm struggling to find any strength in them other than that I know not to try and produce work for competition briefs i'm unsure fit my practise. I really struggled with everything within this brief, from idea generation to picking the colour schemes. I suppose it's all a learning curve though.
GOING FORWARD:
I'd like to produce some more screen prints to take to Print Stuff with me in April, and explore anything else I could possibly create to sell there. I'm going to carry on exploring colour, shape and composition which I'm pretty sure i've also said in my previous two critical reflection posts. Something else I've been thinking a bit about as well is the possibility of a collaboration with a graphic designer; I've been admiring a lot of graphic design recently on instagram and I've been thinking about how my work could sit alongside it, so this is something I might try and look into doing. After last years collaboration I'm still unsure if this is something I want to do but I think it's worth having another go. Similar to this, I'd quite like to explore putting some type into my imagery and see how this works; maybe this about creating some posters and experimenting digitally with my illustrations.
